Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

A virtual world is a whole new world where everything seems real when non of it in reality is real. It is a place to do anything one can't do in the real world, sort of like a dream world. There's no limit to what you can/want to do. In my opinion, the virtual world is a "double-edge sword".

Some pros of the virtual world is the ability to practice/train virtually which won't have any negative effects to the real world. As mentioned in article "Avatar II: The Hospital" nurses can create situations through online simulations to prepare for when it happens in reality. Virtual worlds can also be used in an educational way for students for creativity according to the article "After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get a Reboot?". Virtual worlds can exercise the mind of its users on their imagination and much more.

The cons of the virtual world can also be practicing and training virtually. It is a double-edge sword to train virtually because while it can help prepare for future situations, it can also display what one can do virtually might not be the real case in reality. I also believe virtual worlds can definitely bring users together as mentioned in article "Going to the Virtual Office in Second Life", but I do believe real life connection is needed or many will be anti-social.

Virtual worlds foster creativity in many different ways because many if not all is customized to its users. As mentioned earlier, users can customize training situations as practices. Gaming is becoming such a huge trend today for teenagers; many games allow users to customize their in-game character to be very detailed. Detailed as in height, eye color, eye size, eyebrows, hair, skin tone, body structure, etc. You name it, they have it !!!!

I believe future virtual worlds will become and seem more real compared to the real world. However, I don't think it will ever be as real as reality. For example, one can be going out to the space, but it won't ever feel the same as visiting in real life.

  1. I agree, I don't think virtual reality will ever replace reality. Some things need to be experienced in reality to feel there impact.
