BLOG: Blog V Wiki

Blogs and Wikis are platforms created and edited by people that holds a lot of information which are meant to be shared on the Web. Despite blogs and wikis having similarities, they also have many key differences. A blog is a virtual place on the Internet in which people post about almost anything (there's a lot of freedom); other users can also discuss and comment on posts that they're interested in. Is having too much freedom a good thing? In article "Stung by the Perfect Sting", the topic of defamation occurred and the user posted it received a lawsuit. Users should keep in mind that whatever they post, it is on the Internet, a place where the whole world can see.  A wiki on the other hand, is also a virtual encyclopedia on the Internet, but a wiki is much more informative (meaning mostly/only information would be posted). Some similarities between a blog and a wiki are the users expressing their own thoughts and sharing information they hold. With that said, some information and thoughts found on these two platforms can be very opinionated and biased. Most Wikipedia contributors are male computer geeks as mentioned in " Wikipedia Looks Hard at Its Culture". Hence, not all information is accurate and is typically biased.

Convergence is quite important in today's society, especially in New York City because we're a very fast-pace and busy city. There are changes every second and the fastest thing that can keep up with this change are the informative online platforms such as blogs and wikis.

A new use of wiki that has not been done yet can be in video format, kind of like a video documentary instead of an article. I personally prefer to watch a video over reading a book and I'm sure many others do too.

  1. I like that idea of video format for wiki. Utilizing video can help people associate and image to a specific person, or group, or topic. I'm more of a visual learner myself, and for some people who prefer associating images and faces, would probably enjoy such possibilities with video-formatting with Wiki. Allowing video-accessibility for Wiki would probably be a step that Wiki should take, because I feel as though the modern generations tend to rely on sources like video instead of simply reading through articles.

    1. I am also more of a visual learning and therefore prefer videos over reading articles. Although I'm sure the process of implementing it can get a bit more complex.
