Blog: Next New

As of today we have virtual reality otherwise known as VR, but only up to a certain extent. When we use VR we need a remote control to control what we do in it. I hope for the future to develop a better version of VR that I believe will eventually be possible. I want there to be a hardware system that can sync with a human's brain in which people can actually deep dive into VR. This will eliminate the need for the use of remote control. Their consciousness will actually be within the VR and practically sleeping in real life (unconscious in real life). This might sounds kind of scary, but if technology is of this level it will actually be really cool in my opinion. The downside to this would be people not being able to differentiate VR and the real world if they are too into it. Long usage of this can also develop health issues due to lack of exercise and their diet would probably be bad. Therefore, moderate use of this new media would be recommended. I got this idea through a s...

Blog: Wiki So Far

Throughout the past few weeks, I edited grammars and formatted pictures on content other people contributed. I have also contributed by adding a few paragraphs and some pictures to existing new media topics. The topics I added content to includes New Media in Love, Fashion, MMORPGs, and Twitch.tv. I created another section for Finding Love through the use of Mobile Apps which is section 5.11 for the dating app Tantan. Tantan is a Chinese dating app that is mainly use by Asians and is extremely similar to Tinder which causes it to be known as the Chinese version of Tinder. Under section 5.11 I added a paragraph explaining what Tantan is like, comparing it, and explaining how to use it. I also added another paragraph to section 5.13 of the same topic known as the Dangers of Online Love Finding. Here I inputted a case that happened a few years ago where an online dating app user got murdered by the online date she was meeting up with. For Social Media and Fashion I created a new sec...

Blog: P2P

File sharing is what it sounds like, sharing files or transmitting files via networks or Internet. P2P file sharing is peer-to-peer file sharing through a sharing file software that is connected to other networks. P2P has a lot of benefits including saving lots of money by downloading files that you otherwise have to pay for yourself. People should take advantage of P2P file sharing as mentioned in "Take Advantage of P2P - not fear it" by King. I agree people should take advantage of P2P file sharing, but should definitely be careful when doing so. This is because all files are shared by other users and have a chance of having viruses and other issues. I have used P2P file sharing in the past and have had bad experiences. I was an inexperienced user back in elementary school and I was introduced by a friend to use LimeWire to download music, as a result it was indeed very convenient but I found out later to have a lot of viruses on my computer. It was later found out to be ...

Blog: Privacy

With the rise of social media and network platforms, there is practically no privacy and confidentiality. Everyone today especially the innocent naive users post everything they do online thinking only their friends and families could see it. Little did they know anyone that is slightly better with computers can find out what they posted at ease if they wanted to. People post things like pictures, comments, identity information (I do not know why people would ever do that). They are the prey to the cyber attackers out in the Internet world and can actually harm them in real life, such has stalkers. Not only is there hackers and other criminals out there going through people's information. There is also the government that spies on everyone to see if people are up to no good. This is indeed supposed to be in good intention, but it does not stop the fact that they are invading people's privacy. There are also big corporations and other jobs opportunities that look at people...

Blog: Advice

There are many ways new media can be used to improve college experience for professor's and students. One way would be professors making a YouTube video of their lecture slides and voice recording as materials for online/hybrid courses. This can really help because just reading lecture slides might be confusing, so adding a voice recording of explanation would definitely help and people generally learn better with both visual and listening. Another way is for every student and professor to have a Facebook account for college use only. Every student will then be invited to a group by each of their professors so that the group is organized into every class/section. All materials, announcements, and grades would be posted to the group and things not related to the class won't be there. People can also share information in case anyone missed anything during class. This is definitely better than Blackboard because people tend to check social media more than Blackboard. Social medi...

Creativity and New Media

Image
In this 2D world there are many creativity possibilities. I made a "me" avatar as you can see standing on a floating rock. The highlight for me in this world is when I do quest/missions, especially party quests with other individuals in this world because I like the accomplishment of completing them. Just like it sound "party quest" is creating a group with up to 6 people to figure out how to complete the quest within a given amount of time. Everyone is required to think out of the box, show coordination, and help each other out. But of course this is not the only thing I did in this world. I also like to start my own mini business in which I sell rare items I acquire from quest or from hunting monsters. Oh, I forgot to mention the cute orange mushrooms in this screenshot are actually "wild monsters" as you can tell by that "danger" sign I am facing. Another fun thing is building my avatar's looks and attributes. I tend...

HW Creativity

New media have always fostered creativity in one way or another. YouTube have always allowed it's users to post videos or music that can be unique to themselves that also gives other ideas. A lot of viewers on YouTube share and generate ideas through others; it's like a community. For example, the way a YouTuber vlogs is something they created that might result as a trend that others follow. In article, "1+1+1=1" they talk about mashing up different music into one song. It is the creativity of taking certain parts of each song that will fit well together and harmonizing it. A good example would be "Debra" a song by Beck and "Frontin" a collaboration by Jay-Z and Pharrell Williams. The two songs mashed up together is later known as "Frontin on Debra". Without new media everything will be a lot more isolated from one another. Not saying that there can't be creativity without new media, but with new media it definitely helps and complime...

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

A virtual world is a whole new world where everything seems real when non of it in reality is real. It is a place to do anything one can't do in the real world, sort of like a dream world. There's no limit to what you can/want to do. In my opinion, the virtual world is a "double-edge sword". Some pros of the virtual world is the ability to practice/train virtually which won't have any negative effects to the real world. As mentioned in article "Avatar II: The Hospital" nurses can create situations through online simulations to prepare for when it happens in reality. Virtual worlds can also be used in an educational way for students for creativity according to the article "After Second Life, Can Virtual Worlds Get a Reboot?". Virtual worlds can exercise the mind of its users on their imagination and much more. The cons of the virtual world can also be practicing and training virtually. It is a double-edge sword to train virtually because whi...

Blog about Twitter

Twitter is like a new unknown social media networking site to me. I personally don't really like how Twitter works because it is not as user friendly as others. I still do not know the difference between Reply and Retweet as mentioned in my previous blog. But for class discussion purposes, I dislike the idea of people using personal Twitter accounts because it makes it very difficult due to the amount of spams I see on my feed. I get the idea of hashtag to search for stuff related to class discussion, but I would say it is a lot more convenient if everyone have a fresh new account used solely for our class discussion. On the other hand, Blackboard discussion is better but still not really to my liking because it takes too many clicks to reply to a single post. I like posts like Facebook or Instagram where you can just click "Reply" on the post when you see it on the feed. Blackboard is a lot more organized compared to Twitter because it is visible to all classmates and ab...

Blog: Social networking sites

The four out of many social networking sites I use today includes Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Here I will give some functions, feedback and first impression of each social networking site. My first ever social media was Facebook which was created in high school and I consider myself to be pretty late in using social media because I was always told about the cons of social media. Facebook is a very user friendly networking site that is my main form of keeping in contact with friends. It is also very convenient because Facebook updates me about current events and keep me up to date on things I like/follow. Twitter on the other hand, is my most recent social networking site I started to use and I don't really like how it works. Maybe I'm just not used to it's functions, but I don't find this site to be user friendly at all. For example, isn't reply and retweet the same thing? Is reply more like commenting while retweet more like sharing the tweet? I am ...

Blog Social networking

Social networking is becoming an extremely popular trend in society today where everyone have some sort of social media. Some might only use one and others might choose to use many. There's an abundant amount of social media out there such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. There are many ways people can use social media, but most would agree connecting and socializing is the most useful. With social media, people can connect with friends from childhood through mutual friends and recreate long lost friendship. Other may just have social media to stay connected with others for future opportunities. Many corporations today use social media to recruit new employees according to the article "Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting" and the most popular social media for that would be LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a social media for professional use across the world where information of talented individual is accessible. The classic way of just applying to a job is current...

BLOG: Blog V Wiki

Blogs and Wikis are platforms created and edited by people that holds a lot of information which are meant to be shared on the Web. Despite blogs and wikis having similarities, they also have many key differences. A blog is a virtual place on the Internet in which people post about almost anything (there's a lot of freedom); other users can also discuss and comment on posts that they're interested in. Is having too much freedom a good thing? In article "Stung by the Perfect Sting", the topic of defamation occurred and the user posted it received a lawsuit. Users should keep in mind that whatever they post, it is on the Internet, a place where the whole world can see.  A wiki on the other hand, is also a virtual encyclopedia on the Internet, but a wiki is much more informative (meaning mostly/only information would be posted). Some similarities between a blog and a wiki are the users expressing their own thoughts and sharing information they hold. With that said, some ...

New Media: Online Dating vs. Offline Dating

In the past people were only dating offline and there's nothing wrong with that. Now technology is blooming at a rate no one have seen before creating many new media. New media allows people the opportunity to date online through applications. There are both pros and cons of online dating and offline dating. Some benefits of online dating includes convenience, options, and opportunities while risks includes scams and fake information. On the other hand, the benefits of offline dating consists of having no misrepresentation, being more official, and getting to know each other faster. The disadvantage consists of being limited to only people around you and receiving rejections hurt more. Through information found online and information collected from survey, I will discuss and compare the pros and cons more in-depth.
